Literacy Assembly

We celebrated literacy with all of Northside Elementary School on Dec. 22nd with an assembly filled with fun readers, bookmarks and book shopping. 6 local readers came and read to students; Paul Esser- Sun Prairie Mayor, Jeff Voekel- American Family Dreams Foundation, Joe Parisi- Dane County Executive, Adam Schraeger- WISC-TV newscaster, Josh Miller- Young Adult book author and Patrick DePula- Salvatore's Pizza owner and chef. The children loved having time to listen to each reader and interact with them. Afterwards each child could select a new book to keep for themselves and make a bookmark. We loved seeing kids so excited about the literacy assembly and books. 562 new books were given to

YWCA Partnership

This fall semester we partnered with the YWCA downtown shelter to provide them with monthly mentors; in return they gave us with plenty of smiles and appreciation. Lisha Terre, volunteers as the Children’s Resource Coordinator for this program and worked with Lisa Xiong, the Director of the Children’s Program at the YWCA to understand the children’s needs. Madison Reading Project sends four volunteers twice a month to engage with the children who live at the shelter through various activities. Each month, Lisha prepares a themed activity that includes a literacy project, a corresponding book and snack.
