Book Giving

Our number one goal is to get high quality books into the hands of kids and educators who need them most.  Our staff and volunteers are dedicated to collecting and selecting books that are engaging, relatable and ignite a love for reading.

We give books free of charge directly to children at book giving events and during our enrichment programming visits.  In addition, we provide books to schools and community organizations to build classroom and program libraries or to use for internal events or services.

Summer Reading Program

From June 21st until August 13th, our Big Red Reading Bus will be hitting the road for our Summer Reading Program. We will be visiting our community partners on weekly and monthly book giving routes.  Throughout the summer we'll also continue to work with local educators, schools and community organizations to ensure students have access to books they love.  If you would like to request books for your students, please use the form below.

Book Giveaway - Big Red Reading Bus

In May 2019 we launched our mobile book giving service, the Big Red Reading Bus. Our bus is retrofitted with bookshelves that can be stocked with up to 2000 books for ages birth to teen.  Children and families can come aboard the bus and select books to take home.  This service is available March through October and requires a large place to park the bus so that families can board and exit the bus safely.

Book Giveaway - Free Book Fair

Madison Reading Project staff can set up a book giving table/area at your next event.  Staff will be available to help children and families make selections and answer questions about the books.  We can tailor the book selections based on age or the theme of the event.

Books for Educators Program

Our Books for Educators program provides educators with up to 100 books for their classroom or program library.  We are currently offering this service to new teachers, teachers switching grade level as well as educators that have special circumstances such as loss of materials, limited budget or a need for higher quality books that better represent the students served.  For more information click here.

Little Free Libraries

We stock Little Free Libraries across Dane County.  If you own a free library or would like to volunteer to deliver books, please email us.  Madison Reading Project can provide your school or organization with a bin of books for your entry way, office or other high traffic area.  Parents and kids can choose books from the bin whenever they'd like.
